Astronomy Day 1995

Astronomy Day is a National Astronomy Event. In 1995 and 1996 TAAS and many other astronomical organizations, including, but not limited too, UNM Institute for Astrophysics, NRAO, NSO, UNM Institute of Meteoritics, Phillips Lab Starfire Optical Range, and many others, set up displays at Coronado Mall in Albuquerque, NM. Evening observing took place at the UNM Campus Observatory.

Mirror Grinding Exhibit.

Solar Observing. 3 different telescopes set up to observe the sun in different ways. Left, 5" Schmidt-Cassegrain and a glass solar filter. Center: Refractor with an H-alpha filter, provided by Bruce Levin. Right: Dobsonian telescope equipped #14 welder's glass as a solar filter.

Saturn Safari 1994

Each summer TAAS sponsors a huge star party. In 1994 the event was called Saturn Safari and was held at Coronado State Monument, just north of Albuquerque, NM. Official attendence was 5650 people (count from the NM State Park Service), making this one of the largest public star parties in the USA.

Members of TAAS set up their telescopes for an eventful evening of observing.

Telescope Making Class

In fall of 1994 we were pleased to have John Dobson with us teaching a class on how to build your own telescope. Though John Dobson is no longer in Albuquerque to teach the class, one of his students, Mike Pendley (past TAAS President), founded TAAS's amateur telescope making class.

John Dobson and Mike Pendley discus the mirror grinding Mike has done so far for his new telescope.

YWCA/APS camp in Tijeras, NM. The kids go for 3 days and learn about "things" - raptors from Hawk Watch, animals from Zoo people, Indian ruins from the park rangers, astronomy from TAAS, etc.. John Hockemeier is adjusting his 8" Meade SCT for the impatient crowd behind him.

VLA Tour - August 19, 1995

The 1995 VLA tour was very popular with TAAS members. The tour, which covered all aspects of the VLA and VLBA, was followed by a star party / camp out at Mt. Withington. The VLA / Mt. Withington trip was repeated in 1996.
