Mark and Elaine Kroska's Celebration of Community
December 21, 2003

Two of TAAS's most active members, Mark and Elaine Kroska, held a celebration amongst friends and family at their home on Sunday, December 21, 2003.  About 40 folks attended the event, for luminaria lighting,  Christmas carols, and friendship.  Mark was also presented TAAS's John Dobson Award for Public Education at this event, because he was unable to attend the award ceremony held the week before.  - Photos by Nancy Davis and Larry Cash

Friends gather at Mark's home, and begin lighting luminarias.

Mark's Invitation to Friends

"As some of you know, I was diagnosed with liver and lung cancer two months ago, and given less that six months to live.  Until this week, I lived in that possibility that I would die shortly.  After one session of chemo and the continual intake of pain killing prescription drugs, I could barely tolerate the vomiting and constipation.  I was ready to go.

But the community said "NO WAY."  They said "I WOULD BE WELL."  This week I started a whole new life, based on living.  I am now totally of all prescription drugs and no longer need pain killers.  The detox and other therapy programs the community has for me has reversed the course of the cancer.  I am getting stronger each day.

As a result, we are having a celebration of community this Sunday, and I warmly invite each of you to come.  There will be a lunimaria lighting event, and afterwards hot chocolate, apple cider, cookies, brownies, and other goodies. There is no need to bring your telescopes, since Elaine and I have three telescopes that you can help her set up if you wish.  All you need to bring is
yourselves and plenty of laughter." - via the TAAS Listserv
