TAAS at the Chaco Canyon National Historic Park - May 22, 2004

Each year, astronomers from the Albuquerque Astronomical Society, travel to the incredibly dark, historic skies of the Chaco Canyon National Historical Park, to join the public astronomy program held at the Chaco Visitors Center.

The public astronomy program at Chaco Canyon is an ongoing effort, headed by John Sefick and Park Ranger GB Cornucopia.  For details on Chaco Canyon's ongoing astronomy efforts, visit the Chaco Astronomy Page

More details on our May 22 event available here from the National Park Service or contact TAAS President Dale Murray or contact the Chaco Canyon Visitors center by phone at 505-786-7014

From Albuquerque, take I-25 north to Bernalillo, then US550 north 48 miles past Cuba (three miles east of Nageezi).  A sign for Chaco Canyon marks the turn off for New Mexico route 7900 (N 36° 14.452' W 107° 42.392'). Head 12 miles to New Mexico route 7950 and the turn off is clearly marked. While this is a very washboard dirt road, it's in fairly good condition and can be driven in an ordinary passenger vehicle. Continue to the junction of New Mexico route 7980 which enters the park and becomes paved.  The total distance from US 550 is 23 miles.

There is also a road from Crownpoint, but it is usually in such terrible condition, that I will not even bother to list directions. (I've been on this road, and regretted it.)

Note that these roads becomes a morass when it rains, and the rainy season here occurs in the two months of July and August. The rain during this period comes primarily from air mass thunderstorms and can be quite violent and sudden. If there are clouds anywhere on the horizon, be alert when crossing washes for flash floods. Do not cross any wash that has water flowing in it. Call the visitor center at (505) 786-7014 to inquire about conditions.

Water, nice restrooms, and limited campsites are available at Chaco.  However, no lodging, gasoline, repair services, or food are available in the park. The nearest town is 60 miles away. The Blanco Trading Post (weekdays only) or the "Stop 'n Go" on US 550 are the closest places to buy staples.
